Happy New Year 5th Families!
I hope everyone had a wonderful relaxed holiday. It is also my hope that you are coming to school ready to work hard and have fun learning.
We are going to continue to work on our independent reading skills. We will be gradually working back up to reading independently for at least 30 minutes during the day. We will be working for the next few weeks on informational text(nonfiction). We have learned about the author's purpose for writing a nonfiction text - description, cause and effect, problem/solution, order and sequence, and compare/contrast. We will continue to learn about text features that will help us better comprehend a text when we read - charts, graphs, diagrams, etc. We will make a foldable to keep in our reading notebook which can be referred back to as we learn more about improving our reading skills.
For Science this six weeks we are moving into our study of Earth Science. We will begin the six weeks learning about sediment, sedimentary rock, and fossil fuels. We will finish the six weeks learning about alternative energy sources such as solar energy, geothermal energy, and many others.
