Fifth Six Weeks
This last six weeks we have been working on making connections between all genres(fiction, poetry, drama, biography, expository). There have been many great books read and discussions made about those books. My students are working hard on becoming better readers and I am proud of all of their hard work.
For the next six weeks, we will be concentrating on comparing two passages, for example a nonfiction passage with a poem, to discuss and write about how they are alike and different. Students will also be working on writing summaries after reading a book or article.
Last six weeks the 5th graders finished their study of sedimentary rock formation and fossil fuels. They worked as a group to make a model of rock.
After our study of rock, we moved into the study of alternative energy sources(solar, geothermal, hydropower, wind, and biofuels). Students were grouped together, researched these sources of energy, and then presented a “commercial” for their favorite to persuade the rest of the class that their choice was the best choice.
For the 5th six weeks we will be studying a comparison of the sun, Earth, and the moon. We will also be reviewing patterns of the world, such as the water cycle and why the sun seems to move across the sky. We will finish the six weeks with our study of the ecosystems of the world.
